PREPARATION IS KEY

  WHAT MATERIAL ARE YOU DYEING?

The most important first question is… what is the material of your fabric made from?

This will determine which product to use as polyester fabrics will not get the same results as cotton if using All-Purpose dyes.

Neon Green turns out Aqua!!

Below is a great guide to ensure you get the results you want when choosing colours.

HAVE YOU GOT ALL YOUR SUPPLIES READY?

Here is a list of the basic supplies we recommend you keep with your Rit products so you are ready to go when inspirations hits:

  • Plastic Table Cover
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Tongs
  • Large Bowl or Bucket
  • Rubber Bands
  • Measuring Cups and Spoons
  • Old Towel
  • ColorStay Fixative!

 PRACTICE AND TEST

First time dyeing? Start with a simple project like socks or a t-shirt. They are easy and fun, and allow you to get used to the process.

Always test colour either on a paper towel, or an offcut of your fabric if possible.

The longer you leave fabric in the dye the richer the colour, so practice timing for different outcomes.

‘Faded’ colours look great and you can achieve this with shorter soaking time.

Remember to always use ColorStay Fixative!

 WHAT METHOD ARE YOU USING?

Dyeing with Rit requires hot water so depending on the amount of dyeing you are intending to do might determine the method.

Squirt Bottles

These are great for tie-dye projects or for when you want to be specific where the dye goes.

DyeBath

Smaller projects and one off items can be left in a dyebath for up to an hour.

Stove Top

This method is recommended to achieve the most bold or darkest colour possible. It is also suited for projects where multiple items are being dyed over a length of time.

If using Rit DyeMore, you must use the stovetop method.
